The rural world

Sala XII
Cities depended on products from the rural areas. Agriculture was the main Roman economic activity and was developed in villae, country houses, which could be latifundia or small- and medium-sized properties. The land was parceled out with a system known as centuriation that divided the territory into grids of 20 actus (50 hectares).
